The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is a leading American legal advocacy non-profit organization specializing in civil rights and public interest litigation. It is especially noted for its legal victories against and tracking of white supremacist groups, hate groups, and other extremist organizations SPLC is dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society. Using litigation, education, and other forms of advocacy, the SPLC works toward the day when the ideals of equal justice and equal opportunity will be a reality. Civil rights lawyers Morris Dees and Joseph Levin Jr. founded the SPLC in 1971 to ensure that the promise of the civil rights movement became a reality for all. Since then, the SPLC has won numerous landmark legal victories on behalf of the exploited, the powerless and the forgotten. Its lawsuits have toppled institutional racism and stamped out remnants of Jim Crow segregation; destroyed some of the nation’s most violent white supremacist groups; and protected the civil rights of children, women, the disabled, immigrants and migrant workers, the LGBT community, prisoners, and many others who faced discrimination, abuse or exploitation. Three-Legged Dog is familiar to many of you as the two-guitar, three-voice trio that performs in a number of genres including folk, rock and American-roots. Consisting of Wendy Nelson, Pamela Rothstein, and Elias Lieberman, with the frequent addition of “fourth leg” Tony Scalisi on percussion, Three-Legged Dog performs exclusively for charitable causes.
Appearing for the first time at FJC is Brother’s Rye, a Woods Hole based Americana band that channels the spirit of old time jug band music icon, Jim Kweskin, takes a page from hard driving outlaw country legend Hank Williams, and adds just a dash, of the King… of Bluegrass, and Jimmy Martin. The Brother’s Rye have dedicated their musical lives to making sure no one single person leaves the show without smiling, even if it’s just for a little bit. Deftly alternating between originals penned by singer-songwriter Benjamin Lee Paterson and a wide selection of covers, Brother’s Rye offers up a fine blend of “outlaw jug band music” for discerning audiences. Check them out at CD Baby and iTunes, and at their website at https://brothersrye.com/.
